Experimenting with Tile Work

As per request of a family member, I'm currently working on a custom ceramic tile to hang up outside her shore house. With this piece begins my first time carving a ceramic tile. To commence the process, I interviewed her, asking questions like, "What are some of the happiest memories you've had at the beach? What represents your shore community to you? What sort of activities do you enjoy at the beach?" After generating a list of interconnected concepts representative of my family member's personal experience of the shore, including but not limited to the local lighthouse, her Labrador Retriever, and collecting sand dollars, I created a series of graphic designs. From there I chose a final graphic design and proceeded to sketch it onto a flat slab of white clay. Then, I began to create three dimensional shapes representative of my sketch. So far, the project has been a lot of trial and error and an enjoyable challenge. What's even more exciting is that the learning experience is far from over. I have a lot of work left to go! With that, I have equally as much creative freedom to materialize into my final vision for this tile! Let alone glaze options... that's a whole other animal I'll be considering as the process continues. A high fire glaze, several layered high fired glazes, or a mix of low-fire glazes based on the graphic designs original colors. The world is my oyster! Stay tuned for the final product. What glaze do you think would look best on the finished product?
